The Ontario Provincial Police is increasing enforcement efforts across the region during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
Officers from the Northumberland, Bancroft, Lennox and Addington County, Central Hastings, Quinte West, and Prince Edward detachments will be focusing on the “Big Four” causes of road fatalities.
Those areas of concern include impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt non-compliance.
The OPP says officers will be conducting increased patrols on roads, trails, and waterways throughout the weekend.
Police will also use the OPP Airplane Enforcement Program to monitor high-traffic corridors and assist with enforcement efforts.
Drivers are reminded that Ontario’s Slow Down, Move Over law requires motorists to reduce their speed and safely move over when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle or roadside assistance vehicle displaying flashing lights.
The OPP says drivers should plan ahead, avoid distractions, wear their seatbelts, and never drive while impaired.
Police are encouraging everyone travelling this weekend to make safe decisions behind the wheel to help prevent collisions and ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
