The Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding residents to take simple precautions to protect their vehicles following several reports of vehicles being entered in Trenton over the past few days.
Police say an unlocked car door or an open window can provide thieves with an easy opportunity to enter a vehicle and steal property.
The OPP is promoting its “Lock It or Lose It” program, which is designed to help prevent thefts from vehicles through public education and awareness.
Drivers are encouraged to follow four simple steps when leaving their vehicles:
Roll up the windows.
Keep valuables out of sight.
Lock the doors.
Pocket the keys.
Police say properly securing a vehicle can help prevent residents from becoming easy targets for thieves.
The OPP is reminding the public that preventing thefts from vehicles starts with taking a few moments to secure your vehicle before walking away.
The message from police is straightforward: Lock It or Lose It.
