Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety for communities across its watershed as significant rainfall is expected over the coming days.
The advisory covers municipalities from Grafton to Quinte West, north to Rice Lake and east to Centre Hastings. It remains in effect until 4 p.m. on Friday.
Environment forecasts call for 35 to 55 millimetres of rain between Monday evening and Thursday morning, with localized thunderstorms capable of producing even higher amounts.
The conservation authority says the rainfall is expected to cause above-normal water levels and faster flows in local creeks and streams, particularly smaller waterways that can rise quickly during heavy downpours.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, localized flooding of low-lying or poorly drained areas is possible, especially in urban locations where storm drains may be overwhelmed by intense rainfall.
Residents are urged to stay away from rivers, streams, dams, culverts and bridges due to strong currents. Parents and caregivers are also reminded to keep children away from waterways during the advisory.
Lower Trent Conservation says it will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.
