Lake of Burning Plains Woodland Special
When the Alderville First Nation Pow Wow returns July 11 and 12, visitors will experience more than colourful regalia, traditional dancing and drumming.
This year’s gathering carries a special meaning.
Held under the theme “Honouring Our Woodland Spirit,” Cultural Program Advisor Aiden Gorveatt says the 32nd annual Pow Wow celebrates a growing movement to reclaim traditional Woodland Anishinaabe dance styles and pass those traditions on to future generations.
That focus extends throughout the weekend, including a new Woodland Jingle Hand Drum Contest and special dance categories for Tiny Tots and first-time dancers. Gorvette says those events are about more than competition, they shine a light on the artistry behind each regalia while helping young people take their first steps into traditional dance.
Gates open daily at 10 am and the weekend will feature Grand Entries at noon and 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday, along with traditional singing, drumming, dancing, Indigenous artisans, food vendors and cultural demonstrations. Sunrise ceremonies begin each morning at 6 a.m., while visitors can also explore vendors, enjoy traditional foods and experience one of the region’s largest celebrations of Indigenous culture.
While the Pow Wow is rooted in Anishinaabe traditions, Gorvette says the invitation extends well beyond the community.
Admission is $10 per day or $20 for the weekend, with children 12 and under admitted free. Parking is available near the Pow Wow grounds at the corner of County Road 18 and Roseneath Landing Road, with complimentary shuttle service, but the Pow Wow grounds are just a short walk away. Weekend camping is also available for those wishing to fully experience the gathering.
Organizers encourage visitors to stand during Grand Entry and Honour Songs, ask permission before taking close-up photographs of dancers, and most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
The AFN Pow Wow Grounds can be found at 5787 Roseneath Landing Road. To help ensure a safe and respectful celebration, organizers remind visitors that alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs, bicycles and pets are prohibited on the Pow Wow grounds, except for certified service animals. Everyone is invited to share in the celebration.
