Cobourg police are reminding the public to stay out of vacant and private properties following two recent incidents involving youths.
Police say officers were called twice to the former Brookside property on June 22 after reports of a group throwing rocks at second-floor windows and allegedly attempting to force their way into one of the buildings.
Officers attended but did not locate anyone at the scene. Police say the first floor of the building was secure, with doors and windows locked and boarded. Exterior patrols of the property were conducted throughout the night.
In a separate incident early June 23, police responded to a building on King Street East after a nearby resident reported suspicious activity on the roof.
Officers used a drone to assist with the search, but no one was found on the roof. During the investigation, police located an unsecured exterior door and an unoccupied vehicle nearby.
Police later identified five youths in the area who had climbed onto a nearby structure to access the roof. All five were issued Provincial Offence Notices for engaging in prohibited activity on premises. No damage was reported.
Police say entering vacant or unsecured buildings, climbing onto rooftops and engaging in mischief-related activity can create serious safety risks.
Vacant structures may be unstable, contain hazardous materials or present other dangers that are not immediately visible.
Anyone found trespassing on private property may face charges.
Police are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity around vacant or private properties to report it.
