A major investment in education infrastructure is coming to Cobourg.
Ahead of an official announcement scheduled for this afternoon, details show the Ontario government will invest $10.5 million in an addition at Merwin Greer Public School, creating 129 new elementary student spaces and 73 licensed child care spaces.
The project is part of a $1.6 billion provincial investment supporting 79 school construction projects across Ontario. The province says the initiative will create more than 29,000 student spaces and nearly 2,000 licensed child care spaces province-wide.
Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini says the investment reflects both Cobourg’s growth and the need to ensure educational infrastructure keeps pace.
In addition to creating classroom space, the project will significantly expand local child care capacity.
Piccini says combining child care and education in one location can simplify daily routines for parents while supporting economic growth.
According to the province, the funding will support an addition at Merwin Greer Public School that will serve both students and families in the growing community.
While construction timelines have not yet been finalized, Piccini says the planning process could begin soon.
Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Chair Paul Brown says the addition will help support students, staff and families while strengthening Merwin Greer Public School for future generations.
