Port Hope council has scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, June 23, with several matters set to be discussed in closed session.
The meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall and will initially be open to the public. The opening portion of the meeting will also be livestreamed through the municipality’s YouTube channel.
According to a notice issued by the municipality, council will then move into a closed session to discuss three matters permitted under Ontario’s Municipal Act.
Those topics include a staff compensation review involving employee-related matters and labour relations, a potential land acquisition by the municipality, and ongoing negotiations with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited related to municipal property remediation.
The municipality says the discussions fall under specific provisions of the Municipal Act that allow councils to meet privately when dealing with personnel issues, property transactions and certain negotiation strategies.
Once the closed session concludes, council will return to open session and the public livestream will resume.
While details of the confidential discussions have not been released, the inclusion of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited negotiations comes just days after council approved a long-term agreement related to the Port Hope Area Initiative and the future acceptance of eligible low-level radioactive waste at the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility.
Residents wishing to follow the meeting will be able to view the public portions online through the municipality’s YouTube channel.
Questions regarding the meeting can be directed to the municipality’s Legislative Services department.
