Port Hope council tackled a wide range of issues during its June 16 meeting, including recreation projects, water infrastructure, parking enforcement and long-term planning initiatives.
One of the most significant decisions saw council approve a $200,000 contribution from the Community Benefit Fund to help close a fundraising gap for the community’s proposed tennis dome project. Council also approved a new 22-year lease agreement with the Racquet Club. Under the arrangement, the club will not pay rent during its first two years of operation before transitioning to annual lease payments of $10,000.
Council also approved moving forward with the replacement of the Dorset Street West standpipe, a key piece of municipal water infrastructure. The project budget was increased from $12 million to $17 million, with approximately $9.66 million coming from provincial funding through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program. The remaining costs will be funded through water rates and development charges.
Meanwhile, councillors received information on a new long-term agreement with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited related to the Port Hope Area Initiative and the future use of the Long-Term Waste Management Facility. Council also authorized a revised telecommunications agreement allowing Bell Mobility to continue operating equipment at the Fox Road Water Tower.
Other decisions included approving a new Municipal Wildland Fire Management Plan, endorsing updated investment management policies, supporting the renaming of the Mill Street parkland to Jeff Lees Memorial Kinsmen Park, and referring a proposed new parking enforcement system back to staff for further review.
Council also received updates on economic development initiatives, film industry attraction efforts, asset management planning and future affordable housing advocacy.
