A program that combines mental wellness, mentorship and environmental stewardship is making its way to Northumberland this weekend.
Operation BeeStrong will host a free beekeeping information session Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon at Dancing Bee Equipment on County Road 2 in Port Hope. The program is aimed at active and retired military members, first responders and other trauma-exposed professionals, including nurses, doctors, paramedics and child protection workers.
Founded by Belleville Police Service officer Jeremy Ashley, Operation BeeStrong uses beekeeping as a tool to support mental wellness while helping participants build connections with others who understand the unique challenges of high-stress professions. The organization also works to connect new beekeepers with experienced mentors.
Ashley says participants don’t need any previous beekeeping experience. Instead, the goal is to introduce people to a hobby that encourages mindfulness, patience and community connection.
The program is also seeking experienced beekeepers throughout Northumberland who are interested in mentoring others.
Sunday’s event will include an introduction to Operation BeeStrong, an educational session on bees and beekeeping led by the team at Dancing Bee Equipment, and a hands-on opportunity to visit the apiary and see beekeeping up close.
Registration is free, although space is limited. Interested participants can reserve a spot by contacting Dana Petrillo at Dancing Bee Equipment.
Ashley says the program’s benefits extend beyond mental wellness, helping support pollinators and strengthen local beekeeping communities while creating meaningful connections between participants and mentors.
