A major reconstruction project along King Street West in Cobourg is set to begin this week (June 1) and is expected to continue for approximately six months.
The Town of Cobourg says construction will take place between the Cobourg Creek bridge and William and Ontario streets as part of a broader infrastructure renewal project identified through the municipality’s Asset Management Plan.
According to the Town, the work will include replacement of watermains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and full road resurfacing.
Throughout construction, King Street West will be temporarily closed to through vehicular traffic, although local access for residents and businesses will continue to be maintained for both vehicles and pedestrians except during short term interruptions.
Town officials say contractors and project engineers will provide advance notice whenever temporary access restrictions are necessary.
Detour signage and traffic information will also be posted throughout the construction period.
The upcoming reconstruction follows gas main relocation work that has been underway since March by NPL Canada on behalf of Enbridge Gas.
The King Street West project is being completed in phases.
Phase one – beginning this spring – covers approximately 460 metres from the Cobourg Creek bridge east to William and Ontario streets.
A second phase extending west from the creek bridge to Burnham Street is currently scheduled to begin in 2027.
The Town says the reconstruction project was identified as a high priority capital investment due to aging underground infrastructure and roadway conditions.
Residents seeking additional information are encouraged to contact the Town’s Public Works and Engineering Division.
