The Cobourg Public Library is filling the month of May with activities designed to bring people together, support local creators and create welcoming spaces for all ages.
From local artisan markets and bee themed children’s crafts to teen gaming nights and a rapidly growing chess club, library staff say the goal is building community connections beyond bookshelves alone.
One of the biggest upcoming events is the library’s Spring Market on Saturday, May 23rd from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., held in partnership with Lake House Candles.
Community Engagement Coordinator Rachel Spence says the event is all about supporting local businesses and creators.
The event is free to attend and will also include a book by donation table hosted by the library.
Families can also take part in a World Bee Day themed craft station running May 19th through 24th at all library branches, where children can create popsicle stick bees while learning about the importance of pollinators.
For teens, the library is hosting a Teen Hangout on Wednesday, May 27th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, one of the library’s fastest growing programs continues to be its weekly chess club.
The program has become so popular it recently expanded into the library’s larger Rotary Room to accommodate growing attendance.
The library is also continuing its Boomers programming for adults 55 plus later this month, including sessions on lawn bowling and senior safety awareness.
Spence says the library’s evolving lineup reflects its role as a community gathering space where people can learn, connect and spend time together – while still finding the perfect excuse to head home with a great book.
