Ontario Provincial Police is thanking residents across Northumberland and beyond for the support shown following the on-duty death of Sergeant Brandon Malcolm.
In a statement released May 14, 2026, the OPP said officers and staff have been deeply moved by the outpouring of compassion from community members, first responders and police services across the province.
Police noted thousands of people lined highways and bridges, attended processions and shared messages of condolence and memorial tributes in honour of Malcolm’s life and service.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said the support shown by both the policing community and the public has brought comfort to officers and staff during a difficult period of grief.
Northumberland OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Mike Cavanagh also thanked the community, saying the kindness and support shown by residents has provided strength and solace to officers, colleagues and Malcolm’s loved ones.
OPP described the public response as a powerful reflection of the connection between police officers and the communities they serve.
Police say Malcolm served with dedication, professionalism and pride throughout his career, adding the respect shown by the public reflects the impact he had within the community.
OPP is continuing to ask that privacy and respect be extended to Malcolm’s family, friends and colleagues as they navigate the loss.
