While spring has been slow to start, birds are flocking to southeastern Ontario just in time for Presqu’ile Provincial Park’s Warblers and Whimbrels weekend May 16 and 17.
The spring migration spectacle is always a popular draw to Brighton.
Bev Cook with Friends of Presqu’ile says you’ll see a variety of birds.
Cook says more than 100 bird species actually nest at Presqu’ile.
During the May long-weekend, Cook says there will be experts on-hand to make it an enjoyable and informative weekend.
There will also be bird-banding demonstrations and guided bird walks.
Because it’s a holiday weekend, Cook recommends planning ahead.
While you don’t need special equipment to see the birds, Cook says having binoculars or a telescope allows you to view from a distance.
In terms of a pro-tip, organizers do suggest keeping to marked trails. Some birds nest on the ground and most birds forage on the ground looking for insects and seeds.
Cook says it’s not polite to stomp through their dining area.
While the whimbrel is probably the most fascinating bird you’ll see, Cook says there’s a lot of diversity at Presqu’ile.
The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre at Presqu’ile Provincial Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 16 and 17 with displays and volunteers on hand.
The Friends of Presqu’ile Gift Shop will be open and Friends of Presqu’ile will host a fundraising barbecue lunch both days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
