Communities across Northumberland continue to honour OPP Sergeant Brandon Malcolm following his death in the line of duty Monday in a Highway 401 collision near Burnham Street in Cobourg.
Flags remain at half staff across the Town of Cobourg in tribute to the 33-year-old officer, who had served with the OPP’s Northumberland Detachment since 2020. Before joining the OPP, Malcolm also served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland said on behalf of council and the community, heartfelt condolences are being extended to Malcolm’s family, friends, and colleagues.
He said Cobourg honours Malcolm’s service and the sacrifice he made to keep others safe.
Cleveland also thanked the first responders who attended the scene under extremely difficult circumstances and said the town is also thinking of those injured and continuing their recovery.
A memorial police motorcycle outside the OPP Northumberland detachment has become a gathering place for flowers, messages, and tributes from residents paying their respects.
At the Brighton OPP detachment, a condolence book has been made available for residents wishing to share messages of support for Malcolm’s family and colleagues.
Northumberland OPP continue to investigate the fatal collision and are renewing their public appeal for help.
Police are asking anyone who may have information, dashcam footage, or video from Highway 401 near Burnham Street around the time of the collision to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
Flags in Cobourg will remain at half staff until the day of Malcolm’s funeral as the region continues to mourn his loss.
