The Town of Cobourg welcomed a delegation from Sri Lanka April 23rd and 24th as part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Partnerships for Municipal Innovation Women in Local Leadership program.
The visiting group included elected officials, municipal secretaries, technical officers, and coordinators working on community projects such as accessible parks, sanitation facilities, markets, and drinking water systems.
Delegates were officially welcomed outside Victoria Hall by Cobourg council members and Alderville First Nation Chief Taynar Simpson. The ceremony included prayer, drumming, a Sri Lankan flag raising, and performances of both national anthems.
The delegation also attended a special council meeting and toured municipal facilities with a focus on peer learning and knowledge sharing.
Town officials say the program helps strengthen women’s participation in local government and supports more inclusive community leadership.
Cobourg has been involved in the initiative since 2022 and received an Outstanding Institutional Contribution Award in 2024 for its participation.
