Northumberland County says the final phase of construction at the Welcome intersection in Port Hope is set to begin April 27, with work expected to be completed by the end of May.
The intersection, located at County Roads 2, 10 and 74, has been the focus of a multi-year project aimed at improving safety and traffic flow. County officials say this final stage will complete key upgrades designed to enhance visibility and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Work in the coming weeks will include culvert installation for improved drainage, new streetlight poles, adjustments to catch basins and manholes, and completion of curbs, sod, and final asphalt paving with line painting.
During construction, temporary single-lane closures will be in place on approaches to the intersection. Traffic will be managed through flagging operations, and motorists are being asked to slow down and follow posted signage while travelling through the area.
Short-term impacts are expected for nearby residents, particularly during paving, when driveway access may be temporarily restricted. The County says advance notice will be provided, and access for emergency services and deliveries will be maintained.
The project has included realignment of roads, new turning lanes, pedestrian crossings with flashing beacons, and upgraded lighting and signage. Officials say the improvements are intended to reduce driver confusion and create a safer intersection for residents and visitors.
