A Peterborough resident is facing charges after a traffic stop on Hwy. 401, says Northumberland OPP.
On March 14, 2026, shortly before 10:30 p.m., police said they received a report of a pickup truck travelling westbound on Hwy. 401 in the Township of Cramahe with no lights activated.
Officers said when they found the vehicle, they witnessed it allegedly failing to maintain its lane, leading to a traffic stop. After speaking with the accused, an impaired driving investigation was initiated, reported OPP.
As a result, police said the driver was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further testing.
Following the investigation, police said a 19-year-old Peterborough resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, driving without a proper rear light, failure to surrender a licence, and driving with cannabis readily available.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused will appear in Cobourg court in May 2026 and also had their licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for seven days, reported OPP.
Northumberland OPP is continuing to ask citizens to report suspected impaired driving by calling 911.
“Your call could prevent serious consequences,” stressed police. “Impaired driving – whether by alcohol or drugs – is a criminal offence and speeding is another dangerous behaviour that can lead to those same serious consequences.”
OPP also encourages residents to get informed about the consequences and penalties surrounding impaired driving.
