Visitors can now experience Canada’s High Arctic without leaving the Bay of Quinte.
The Quinte Museum of Natural History has officially opened its newest exhibition, Expedition Alert: Stories from the High Arctic, offering an immersive look at one of the most remote environments on Earth.
Launched March 16 during March Break, the exhibit brings the landscapes, wildlife and research of Canadian Forces Station Alert on Ellesmere Island to Quinte West.
The exhibition features iconic Arctic species such as polar bears, muskoxen, Arctic hares and wolves, alongside stories of scientific research and northern life. It also explores how animals, researchers and communities adapt to extreme conditions.
Interactive elements are a key part of the experience. One highlight is a video game developed by animation students at Loyalist College, allowing visitors to step into the role of an Arctic hare navigating the challenges of survival on the tundra.
The project represents one of the museum’s most ambitious efforts, combining national research partnerships with local collaboration. Contributors include SmartICE, Nanuk Narratives, Loyalist College and researchers from the Université du Québec à Rimouski, along with support from the Royal Ontario Museum and Canadian Forces Station Alert.
Funding for the exhibit was provided by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, with additional support from the City of Quinte West and regional partners.
Organizers say the exhibition aims to connect visitors with the realities of a rapidly changing Arctic while making complex scientific research accessible.
Expedition Alert: Stories from the High Arctic is now open to the public.
