Bell Canada is preparing to begin telecommunications upgrades along Walton Street in Port Hope, with work expected to start March 9.
The project will take place between Pine Street and Mill Street and is scheduled to continue through March 27 on weekdays.
According to project information, the work will focus on replacing aging copper telecommunications lines and updating some newer lines that were installed during the Walton Street reconstruction project.
During the reconstruction, most of Bell’s work involved upgrading the underground infrastructure used to support telecommunications cables. The upcoming project will focus on updating the actual lines within that system.
The work will be carried out by Directdore Inc., a contractor working on behalf of Bell Canada, which has obtained a Road Occupancy Permit for the project.
Officials say there will be no drilling or digging required. Instead, crews will pull new cables through existing Bell maintenance holes along the street.
Although disruptions are expected to be minimal, residents and businesses may see temporary closures as the work progresses. These may include rolling closures of four parking spaces, occasional lane or sidewalk closures near maintenance holes and, if necessary, short term closures of small sections of the roadway to support safe work zones.
Access for pedestrians, residents and businesses will be maintained as much as possible throughout the project.
Closures will shift as crews move along the street, with work expected to wrap up by the end of March.
