A Belleville man accused of trying leave a Cobourg business with a cart full of unpaid merchandise is facing charges, say police.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, at about 4:15 p.m., the Cobourg Police Service said officers responded to the shoplifting call in the Strathy Road and DePalma Drive area, where it was reported that a man was attempting to exit the store with a cart full of unpaid merchandise.
Cobourg police said the man was also identified as the same suspect involved in a previous shoplifting incident.
The accused was found inside the store, reported police.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 37-year-old Belleville man was charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was released on an undertaking with a future court date, reported police, who provided no other details surrounding the alleged incidents.
