Drivers in Port Hope will soon pay more to park in the downtown core.
According to the Municipality of Port Hope, hourly rates at metered on street spaces and paid municipal lots will rise from one dollar to one dollar fifty beginning February 17. The change applies on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Parking will continue to be free in the evenings and on weekends.
The municipality notes the last rate increase occurred 13 years ago. Officials say research comparing neighbouring communities indicates the updated pricing remains similar to or lower than many nearby downtown areas.
In addition to the hourly adjustment, the daily maximum will increase from ten dollars to fifteen. Seasonal passes for the boat launch will also change, moving to two hundred twenty five dollars for residents and three hundred dollars for non residents.
Staff say the updated structure is intended to promote turnover of spaces, improve access for visitors and support ongoing lot maintenance, resurfacing and infrastructure upgrades.
Payment can be made through the HotSpot Parking app or at machines using coins, credit, debit, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
People displaying a valid accessible parking permit or a veteran graphic licence plate may continue to park free when designated spaces are full.
