Northumberland County’s Social Services Committee reviewed shelter operations, housing classifications and emergency response efforts during its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Committee members received correspondence raising concerns about intake criteria at the shelter at 310 Division Street in Cobourg. Associate Director of Social Services Rebecca Snell Grove said the criteria were set by county council when the site transitioned to a higher-barrier shelter.
Councillors also questioned how housing units at the site are categorized. Acting Chief Administrative Officer Glenn Dees explained that ten fourth-floor units are transitional and not part of Northumberland County Housing Corporation or rent-geared-to-income housing.
Staff indicated further breakdowns of housing availability and future projections can be brought forward at a later date.
During questions from the media, county staff addressed the apartment fire in Colborne that displaced multiple residents. Snelgrove said 18 households were affected and continue to receive support from housing staff and partner agencies.
County officials also acknowledged emergency responders, staff and community members for their response during what Snelgrove described as the hardest week of her career.
All agenda items were received for information. The Social Services Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for March 4.
