Cobourg council is set to meet Wednesday, January 28, with several agenda items expected to draw public interest, including winter safety supports and councillor compensation.
One notice of motion calls on the town to explore a snow removal assistance program for seniors ahead of future winters. The proposal aims to support older residents who face physical or financial barriers to clearing driveways and walkways, with the goal of improving safety and accessibility during snow events.
Council will also revisit warming room services in Cobourg. The motion follows recent extreme cold warnings and Northumberland County’s operation of an overnight warming room at County Headquarters on Courthouse Road. Councillors are expected to discuss whether Cobourg should pursue expanded local warming options, including potential daytime or overnight facilities to complement county-led services during periods of severe cold.
Another item on the agenda focuses on pensions for elected officials. Council will consider a motion directing staff to examine allowing municipal councillors to participate in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, or OMERS. Supporters argue the change could help modernize council compensation and improve recruitment and retention, while others may raise concerns about costs and equity.
Residents can review the full agenda, supporting documents, and livestream details through the Town of Cobourg’s website.
