Northumberland County Council has approved the signing of a Twinning and Cooperation Agreement with Albany County in New York State, formalizing a new cross-border partnership focused on economic and cultural collaboration.
The agreement establishes a framework for strengthened communication between the two counties, while encouraging cooperation in key sectors including manufacturing, agriculture and agri-food, energy, and tourism. It also promotes the sharing of best practices, along with opportunities for cultural and academic exchange.
County staff say the partnership was initiated through the Office of the Warden following Council direction in June 2025. The move is part of broader efforts to build stronger relationships with U.S. border communities and advance shared economic interests during a period of ongoing uncertainty.
Officials note that twinning agreements are designed to create long-term connections between jurisdictions with similar economic and community priorities. By formalizing ties with Albany County, Northumberland aims to open new doors for collaboration, innovation, and mutual support.
The agreement does not include financial commitments but instead focuses on cooperation, communication, and relationship-building. Staff will now proceed with a public announcement and begin planning a future signing ceremony involving the Northumberland County Warden and the Albany County Executive.
County representatives say the partnership reflects a commitment to working beyond borders to support local industries, strengthen communities, and explore new opportunities for growth on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border.
