Port Hope council has officially approved the schedule for the 2026 municipal budget process, outlining key dates for staff, council, and public participation.
Since the introduction of Strong Mayor Powers in 2025, Mayor Olena Hankivsky has the authority to independently prepare and present the budget before February 1. However, for 2026, she has chosen to follow the Municipality’s traditional collaborative approach, allowing council and residents to be actively involved in budget discussions.
Municipal staff have been working throughout the summer and fall to develop detailed capital and operating budgets. This work includes a line-by-line review of all expenditures and consideration of rising costs for materials, fuel, and construction. The goal is to maintain essential services while minimizing tax levy impacts through efficiencies, grants, and partnerships.
Council will review the staff-prepared draft budget at meetings on January 13 and 15, 2026, in the council chambers at Town Hall. Following these meetings, the mayor will establish the Proposed Budget, which will be published online for public review and comment. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback during this period.
Council members may also submit proposed amendments to the clerk to be included for consideration at the February 3, 2026 meeting. This process highlights a commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and democratic engagement, ensuring community voices are part of shaping Port Hope’s budget priorities.
The Municipality emphasizes that public input and Council deliberations will guide the final budget, balancing fiscal responsibility with the delivery of essential municipal services.
