United Way Peterborough & District has raised $574,000 toward its 2025–26 campaign goal of $1.6 million, marking 36 per cent of the target with several months still left in the drive.
CEO Jim Russell says the need for community support continues to rise across the city and the province. “In Peterborough, and frankly, across Ontario, we’ve seen the need for community investments continue to rise this year,” he said. “Through our research and the work of our 20 partner agencies, United Way Peterborough & District has gained insight into where we can make the biggest impact and help where it matters most. The annual community campaign is how we deliver on this promise to build community and change lives.”
This year, United Way has brought back its Donation Match program, made possible by anonymous donors. New contributions will be matched 100 per cent, and returning donors who increase their previous gift by 10 per cent or more will have the increase matched.
Local couple Dr. James Ryan and retired nurse Sheila Ryan recently donated $125,000 to the campaign. Russell described the gift as “a commitment to the health of our community” and “shining examples of people who care and want what is best for our community.” Sheila Ryan said, “It’s good to know that people are thinking about the United Way Peterborough, period, and what’s needed this year especially.”
United Way has also launched several new initiatives, including a monthly 50/50 raffle. Campaign Chair Paul Rellinger said, “We want the community to win in more ways than one. Each ticket purchased directly supports the United Way’s campaign, with 50 per cent contributing to local partner agencies and the remaining 50 per cent awarded to the lucky winner. No matter who wins, every dollar spent stays local and strengthens the community.”
Rellinger also highlighted Peterborough Performs VI, scheduled for Thursday, February 26 at Showplace. “Since its inception in March 2020, Peterborough Performs has proven to be the marquee live entertainment event that brings together community with the city’s vibrant music scene,” he said. The event has raised close to $150,000 to date for United Way-supported agencies. Tickets are $50 each or two for $80, and can be purchased at the box office or online at showplace.org.
Other upcoming events include the first-ever Ultimate Burger Battle, wrapping up November 30, and the annual Pajama Day on December 12, with participation from workplaces and schools across Peterborough and the county.
Community members and workplaces wishing to participate in United Way Peterborough & District’s 2025–26 campaign have until March 31 to get involved. Full details and online donations are available at uwpeterborough.ca.
