Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler made an unforgettable Professional Women’s Hockey League debut on Saturday night, helping the New York Sirens earn a 4-0 win over Ottawa. The rookie forward picked up three assists, setting a new league record for most assists in a first game. It was also just the second time in Sirens history that a player recorded three assists in a single outing.
Wheeler and the Sirens now head to Montreal, where they will face the Victoire on Tuesday.
Out west, former Napanee Crunch goaltender Hannah Murphy served as backup for the Seattle Torrent as they opened their season in Vancouver. Seattle lost 4-3 in overtime, but Murphy may see action Friday when the Torrent host Minnesota in their first-ever home game.
