The Deseronto Fire Department is reminding residents to take safety precautions during Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week, running November 1–7 across Ontario. Officials say carbon monoxide is a silent, invisible, and potentially deadly gas produced by fuel-burning appliances, including furnaces, hot water heaters, fireplaces, portable heaters, stoves, generators, and vehicles.
Starting January 1, 2026, the Ontario Fire Code will require homes with fuel-burning appliances to have working CO alarms on every level, not just near sleeping areas. Fire officials recommend annual inspections of appliances by licensed contractors to ensure they are functioning safely.
Residents are also reminded to change batteries in smoke and CO alarms when clocks change, including backup batteries in hard-wired and plug-in units. Functioning alarms are essential for protecting families, especially during power outages.
The fire department urges everyone to take proactive steps to protect their homes, follow new safety regulations, and ensure all levels of their homes are equipped with working CO alarms.
