Many Canadians are tired this morning after Game 3 of the World Series between the Blue Jays and Dodgers turned into an all-night grind. The game stretched 18 innings, ending just before 3 a.m., making it one of the longest games in World Series history.
The marathon saw both teams locked in a scoreless battle for 10 innings, from the 8th inning through the 17th, before Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 18th, giving Los Angeles a 6-5 victory. The win put the Dodgers ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.
The game set multiple World Series records. A total of 19 pitchers took the mound, 609 pitches were thrown, and players combined for 153 plate appearances, all of which are new marks for the championship.
In terms of duration, the 6-hour, 39-minute contest ranks as the second longest World Series game ever. Only Game 3 of the 2018 World Series, also involving the Dodgers, went longer at 7 hours and 20 minutes. That game, like last night’s, ended on a walk-off home run by the Dodgers.
For local fans, there was a personal connection to the dramatic finish. Freddie Freeman, whose walk-off homer sealed the victory, has family roots in Peterborough—his mother Rosemary grew up in the city. Freeman also made history in last year’s championship becoming the first player to hit a World Series walk-off grand slam.
The teams face a quick turnaround with Game 4 tonight at 8 p.m. in Los Angeles, just 17 hours after their history-making marathon ended.
