The Northumberland County Housing Corporation (NCHC) is set to receive more than $1.6 million in federal funding to help renew and repair affordable housing units across the region.
The investment, provided through the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund, will support repairs and updates to 333 rent-geared-to-income and transitional housing units managed by NCHC in Brighton, Campbellford, Cobourg, Colborne, and Port Hope.
Northumberland County will also contribute nearly $3.9 million over the next three years toward the project, which will include improvements such as new windows, HVAC systems, plumbing fixtures, flooring, and accessibility upgrades.
Board Chair Victor Fiume said the work will enhance living conditions for current residents while making local housing more sustainable and energy efficient.
“This funding will allow us to make critical repairs that improve the quality of life for residents today, while also making our housing more affordable for the future,” he said.
Northumberland County Warden Brian Ostrander called the funding “a significant step” in ensuring local housing remains safe and resilient.
The Affordable Housing Fund is part of Canada’s National Housing Strategy, a more than $115-billion, 10-year plan aimed at supporting affordable housing development and repair nationwide.
As of June 2025, federal funding through the program has helped support the creation of over 50,000 new units and the repair of more than 174,000 existing ones.
Together, the County and federal contributions represent a combined investment of more than $5.5 million in maintaining and improving community housing across Northumberland.
