Cobourg Police are warning residents to be cautious after a 91-year-old woman was targeted in a distraction theft in a local retail parking lot.
Police say the woman was approached by an unknown female asking for directions. After providing them, the suspect thanked her by pretending to place a necklace around her neck – and in the process, stole the victim’s own necklace. The theft wasn’t discovered until later.
According to police, distraction thieves often work in pairs or groups, using conversation or gestures to divert a victim’s attention before stealing wallets, purses, or jewelry. The tactic is commonly used in parking lots, stores, or at cash registers, and victims may not realize what’s happened until after the suspect has left the area.
The Cobourg Police Service urges residents to stay alert, keep their belongings secure, and report any suspicious behaviour. Officers recommend avoiding close contact with strangers, being cautious when someone asks for help or offers assistance, and never leaving valuables unattended.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or encounters a similar situation is asked to contact Cobourg Police. If a suspect is still nearby, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Police say their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
