Kawartha Downs will see its casino close in 2026 as Ontario’s Optional Slots at Racetracks Program comes to an end.
The program, launched in 2019, was designed as a temporary measure to support racetracks where slot facilities had been closed or relocated. Under OSARP, a lease agreement kept a casino operating at Kawartha Downs, with the program scheduled to conclude on March 31st, 2026.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. said partners, including casino operator Great Canadian Entertainment and the property owner, were aware of the timeline from the outset.
“We will work closely with our casino service provider, Great Canadian, and the property owner to ensure the decommissioning process for these sites is as smooth as possible,” OLG said in a statement.
The Township of Cavan Monaghan, which receives a share of slot revenues through a Municipality Contribution Agreement, will also receive one additional year of MCA payments following the closure. The amount will match what the township receives during the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Since the gaming site first opened in November 1999, Cavan Monaghan has received more than $62 million in MCA payments.
