The Selwyn Fire Department has lifted the brush burn ban that was in place since July 22. With recent rainfall, residents can now resume open-air burning in line with the Township’s Open Air Burning By-law.
“Your cooperation during the burn ban helped prevent potential fires during a very dry period,” said Fire Chief Gord Jopling. “While the ban is lifted, everyone must continue to follow the rules and practice safe burning habits.”
Key fire safety reminders for residents include:
-
Open-air burning is not allowed in built-up areas such as Lakefield, Bridgenorth, Ennismore, Young’s Point, and Woodland Acres.
-
Burn barrels are prohibited, as is burning noxious materials, leaves, grass clippings, or compost.
-
Permits are required for any fire that is not a campfire or outdoor fireplace and are issued only at Selwyn Fire Department Hall 1, 833 Ward Street, Bridgenorth. Call 705-292-7282 for information.
-
No permit is needed for campfires in fire pits or certified propane/natural gas appliances approved by TSSA.
-
Fires must maintain a 1:10 safety distance—e.g., a 2-foot fire needs 20 feet of clearance in all directions.
Burning conditions can change at any time. Residents should check current conditions before lighting any fire by calling the Fire Department or checking Selwyn Township’s Facebook page.
