It’s almost time to bust out your red pumps in support of the thousands of women, kids and youth across Northumberland who turn to Cornerstone for help every year.
That’s right, the Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre’s Walk a Mile fundraiser is just around the corner.
“This will be our 18th year, which is just incredible,” said Cayne Fordham, Cornerstone’s manager of fundraising and communications.
And the fundraiser is critical for the organization, which last year alone, was called on to help more than 3,000 people across Northumberland County.
Funds raised through this signature event help Cornerstone deliver shelter, counselling, housing, and prevention programs.
This year’s Walk a Mile fundraiser is set to make its return on Saturday, Oct. 4 in downtown Cobourg during the Harvest Festival.
Described as a family-friendly walk through the downtown, Cornerstone is hopeful the community will once again answer the call and rally in a show of support for those impacted by gender-based violence.
Whether you’re interested in joining the walk and bringing your friends or dogs – while rocking any shoes you want – or want to stand on the sidelines and cheer, all are welcome. Over the years, the event has often rallied people from all walks of life and professions, including a large contingent of first-responders rocking red heels.
“We look forward to this event every year – it’s such an uplifting day to see the community come together,” added Nancy Johnston, Cornerstone’s executive director. “Whether you walk solo or with a team, we invite everyone to join us in raising awareness and showing support.
“Bring your family, friends and even pets for a morning filled with purpose and fun.”
Wondering what else is happening this year? Fordham has you covered.
Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums are also all set to lead walkers down King Street again this year starting at 11 a.m.
If you’re looking to learn more – or get started on registration online and fundraising efforts – Cornerstone’s website and dedicated “JustGiving” page have everything you need to know. If you can’t attend in-person but still want to get involved and have a lasting impact, those details are also accessible online.
Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for youth under the age of 18, and walkers are encouraged to raise additional pledges to support Cornerstone programs.
“We’d also like to say a special ‘thank you’ to our lead (stiletto) sponsor Ontario Line Clearing and Wharram Tree Service – we couldn’t do this without the generous support of our sponsors,” added Fordham.
