Officials say Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Mexico City September 18 and 19 to strengthen Canada’s relationship with Mexico and reinforce North American prosperity.
During the visit, Carney will meet President Claudia Sheinbaum to advance cooperation on security, infrastructure, investment, energy and trade. The trip follows their meeting at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis and recent visits to Mexico by ministers Anita Anand and François-Philippe Champagne.
Ottawa says the goal is to diversify and strengthen Canada’s trade relationships with reliable partners, creating high-paying careers, growing industries, securing new markets and building more resilient supply chains. Carney says Canada and Mexico have a strong relationship built on more than three decades of free trade and, in a shifting global landscape, both countries are focused on elevating partnerships in commerce, security and energy.
Canada and Mexico marked 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2024. Canadian trade and investment with Mexico are steadily growing, with nearly $56 billion in two-way merchandise trade last year. Mexico is currently Canada’s third-largest single-country merchandise trading partner, while Canada ranked as Mexico’s fifth-largest in 2024.
The two countries will also co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States from June 11 to July 19, 2026, marking the biggest tournament in FIFA history.
Officials say the Prime Minister’s visit will build on these longstanding ties to deliver greater prosperity and security for workers and businesses in both countries.
