The Town of Cobourg is inviting residents to take part in the inaugural Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup on World Rivers Day, Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Hosted by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and funded by the Government of Ontario, Cobourg is one of six communities across the province participating in this first-ever coordinated shoreline cleanup.
Volunteers will meet at the Marina building, 103 Third Street, at 11 a.m. for sign-in, collection of supplies, and coffee before heading out to three local cleanup areas: Victoria Beach, Lucas Point Park, and the Waterfront Nature Park west rocky beach. All necessary supplies will be provided.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland highlighted the importance of protecting the Great Lakes, saying the event raises awareness about the effects of pollution on ecosystems, wildlife, and clean water. Residents are encouraged to register in advance by visiting www.Cobourg.ca/CoastalCleanup or calling the Mayor’s Office.
The cleanup is expected to bring together volunteers across Ontario, collecting and cataloguing litter along Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, as well as the St. Lawrence River. Partner communities include Thunder Bay, Chatham-Kent, Owen Sound, Collingwood, Cobourg, and Kingston.
The Town thanks residents in advance for their participation in this initiative, which promotes environmental stewardship and helps keep the Great Lakes and local waterfronts clean and safe for everyone.
