The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is alerting residents to a recent wave of fraudulent calls from individuals posing as OPP officers.
Scammers are providing fake names and badge numbers while spoofing the caller ID to resemble the OPP non-emergency line. The callers claim to be investigating identity fraud and attempt to transfer victims to a supposed fraud department.
The OPP says these tactics are part of a broader rise in spoofing of business, government, and law enforcement contacts. Fraudsters often use the names of trusted organizations to manipulate people into revealing sensitive information.
The OPP urges everyone to verify the identity of any caller before sharing personal information. Anyone who believes they have been targeted should contact their local police service immediately. Those reporting to the OPP can call 1-888-310-1122. More information on fraud prevention and reporting is available through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
