With the 51st edition of Brighton’s signature fall festival just around the corner, the municipality is reminding residents to plan for a busy Applefest weekend with road closures and parking impacts.
The fall festival attracts some 20,000 visitors to the region, and the most popular day is Saturday, Sept. 27 for the four-day festival.
Officials are reminding residents that Main Street will be closed from Ontario to Prince Edward streets from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate the street fair, which will feature more than 190 vendors this year.
People are asked to follow detour routes and be patient and drive with caution due to the increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic, in particular in the downtown area. Brightonians who normally park on Main Street will also have to remove vehicles by 5 a.m. due to vendor setup.
For those looking for parking during the festival, free parking will be available downtown and on side streets, but there will also be shuttle services for folks looking to avoid searching for spots.
On Saturday only, there will be additional parking at select locations like Dunnett’s Orchard, the King Edward Park Arena, Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church on Centre Street, Evangel Pentecostal Church on Butler Street, the Brighton Health Centre/YMCA building on Main, and the Fellowship Christian Reformed Church at 204 Main St.
There will be accessible parking spaces at all lots with additional accessible parking at 35 Alice and the Sanford Street municipal lots.
The free shuttle buses will run 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with several stops, which are detailed online. Quinte Transit will help with accessible transportation, serving the same stops and pickups from accessible parking lot areas. Residents looking to arrange rides are asked to call 613-899-8287.
Applefest runs Thursday, Sept. 25 to Sunday, Sept. 28.
