Charges have now been laid against two youth in connection to Monday’s devastating fire in Deseronto.
The building on Main Street has been part of the town for decades. It once housed Rathbun Lumber drying kilns, the Dominion Match Company, a meat plant, a cheese factory, and Canada Optical eyewear. Most recently it was an indoor flea market and then a storage facility.
Many in the community who had items in storage are feeling this loss.
myFM spoke with Ron Leeming, who shared his initial reaction was shock, “like you didn’t want to believe it.”
Ron lost a set of snow tires and the rims, but acknowledged he can buy a new set, though it will be expensive.
He says as the week has gone on, he’s remembering other items that were lost in the fire, like two big frame pictures of the farms he grew up on as a kid. Those are now gone forever as there are no other copy’s of those pictures. Other items lost include sentimental sports gear that was used by his father when he was a kid.

The two youth who were charged were released and are due in the Ontario Youth Court of Justice in Greater Napanee at a later date.
