Greater Napanee town council has decided to defer a decision on the rail trail north of Highway 401 until the Ad Hoc Trail Committee can provide further input.
The committee, which includes local landowners and trail enthusiasts, previously recommended focusing on in-town trails, citing challenges with extending the northern section past the 401.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, staff presented several options for the land, including keeping it on the surplus land list with conditions, or selling it to fund in-town trail development. Some councillors supported selling the Class 2 land to raise money for trail projects, while others argued the land should be preserved for potential future trail connections.
Council agreed that the Ad Hoc Committee’s expertise and previous public consultations should guide the next steps. A motion to defer the decision was moved, and it passed unanimously. The committee will return with updated recommendations at a future meeting.
