Greater Napanee council is taking a closer look at safety issues at the town’s train station waiting room after recent concerns about vandalism and public safety.
The town currently leases the east half of the historic station from Via Rail for passenger use. The waiting room, which includes a washroom and heating, recently saw upgrades including new door access controls, alarms, and surveillance. The system automatically unlocks doors before train arrivals, but this has also allowed the space to be misused.
Staff told council that unhoused individuals have increasingly been using the building, creating safety issues for passengers and workers. A staff member was verbally assaulted during a cleaning shift, prompting new safety rules requiring staff to work in pairs.
Council voted to allow staff to reopen talks with Via Rail to explore alternatives, such as ticket scanners or different operating models, to ensure safety while maintaining passenger access.
