Construction has officially begun on peopleCare Peterborough, a new 224-bed long-term care home that will form part of Trent University’s Seniors Village.
The project is backed by Ontario’s Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, part of the province’s broader plan to expand long-term care, create jobs and modernize facilities.
“Our government is improving long-term care by building more homes, hiring more staff, and protecting those who reside in them,” said Minister of Long-Term Care Natalia Kusendova-Bashta in a statement. “Today marks a significant milestone for the City of Peterborough. Once construction is complete, 224 people will have a new home where they can receive the care they need, when they need it.”
The home, expected to welcome its first residents in 2027, will be built around seven “Resident Home Areas” designed to provide a more intimate and familiar setting. Plans also include therapy and quiet rooms, a bistro, a secure landscaped courtyard, a multipurpose spiritual room, and dedicated teaching and research space for Trent University students and faculty.
Officials say the project reflects Ontario’s commitment to build 58,000 new and redeveloped long-term care beds across the province.
