We are just over 400 days away from the next municipal election in Peterborough – and while that may seem far off in the distance for most us, it’s not within political circles.
Rumours have begun to swirl over who might be joining the race for mayor. In an opinion piece done in the Peterborough Examiner by Lois Tuffin, the former editor-in-chief with the Peterborough This Week, three names were highlighted: current councillors Keith Riel and Lesley Parnell, and entrepreneur and community builder Neil Morton.
Tuffin joined ‘PTBO TODAY LIVE’ and explained a lot of runway is needed if you’re planning a mayoral campaign.
No stranger to the grind, Tuffin was active on Henry Clarke’s team during his run for the top job in 2022. In addition to building support, prospective candidates need to start really flushing out their priorities and what might appeal to voters.
Tuffin says you can’t completely rule out Jeff Leal seeking re-election either, despite making some comments in the past about only wanting to do one term.
Of course there will be more at stake than just the mayor’s chair. Tuffin says we should get a healthy amount of people interested in pursuing openings on council as well.
The 2026 municipal elections in Ontario will be held on October 26th, 2026
