Ontario has officially opened the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine in Brampton, welcoming its first cohort of 176 students this fall.
The government says the campus was established with nearly $180 million in provincial funding to support undergraduate and postgraduate medical training, as well as operations for two primary care teaching clinics. These clinics, say officials, will allow students to gain hands-on experience while increasing access to care in local communities.
The new school marks the first medical school opening in the province in 20 years. Once fully operational, TMU’s Brampton campus will provide 94 undergraduate seats and 117 postgraduate positions annually, helping to strengthen Ontario’s health-care system and expand the pipeline of skilled physicians. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to protect health care in the province, which has included adding nearly 100,000 new nurses and over 15,000 new physicians since 2018.
Community and private support are also contributing to the school’s launch. Orlando Corporation has pledged up to $25 million in matching donations to support the training of future physicians. The provincial government is additionally investing $300 million to establish or expand 17 community-based primary care teaching clinics in high-need areas, providing practical learning opportunities for medical, nursing, and allied health students.
With the TMU School of Medicine, Ontario will now have seven operating medical schools. The expansion ensuring the province can train more highly skilled, Ontario-educated health-care providers, improving access to care and supporting the delivery of connected and convenient health services across the province for generations to come.
