This fall, Northumberland Learning Connection presents Feeding a Changing World, a thought-provoking speaking series that explores how climate change, geopolitics, consumer trends, and technology are reshaping how food is produced, distributed and experienced.
Running Thursdays from October 16 to November 27 at the Columbus Community Centre in Cobourg, the series tackles global and local perspectives, offering both big-picture insight and regional relevance.
The program begins with an overview of how vulnerable the global food system is-with 75 per cent of food derived from just 12 plants and 5 animal species and how technological innovations are beginning to mitigate risks.
Another session focuses on the politics of global hunger, examining drivers like conflict, inequality, and trade practices. One evening spotlights food insecurity in Canada, with a portion of ticket proceeds donated to Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank and space for attendees to bring food donations.
Also on offer is a farm tour on October 25 at a long-standing family farm between Cobourg and Port Hope, providing a frontline view of soil management and sustainability on a small-scale operation. Later in the lineup, discussions address consumer culture, looking at how marketing, social media, and evolving definitions of “good food” influence choices. The series closes with a forward-looking session on urban and futuristic farming, including controlled environment agriculture and data-driven approaches inspired by space research.
Tickets are $25 per session, or $150 for the whole series and session recordings will be sent to participants. Northumberland students are eligible for free access to speaker events. Local attendees can expect engaging discussions that bring global food issues back home.
