The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to $14.6 million through the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program (RALP) to help farmers make environmental improvements to their land and build resiliency in the face of tariffs and economic uncertainty.
Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald said the funding will support natural infrastructure and sustainable practices that protect farmland and strengthen Canada’s food system. Ontario Agriculture Minister Trevor Jones called the province’s farmers “incredible, caring stewards” and said the investment will help them make their lands more productive and resilient.
The RALP Marginal Lands Initiative, delivered by Conservation Ontario, is receiving an additional $9.6 million to help farmers create or enhance wetlands, pollinator habitats and other natural features on marginal agricultural lands. Conservation Ontario Chair Dave Barton said the initiative supports farms and protects the land for Ontario’s future and economy.
Another $5 million is going to the RALP Ontario Agricultural Sustainability Initiative, delivered by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association. This program will help farmers plant grasslands and trees, reduce tillage and build water retention features to withstand extreme weather, improve soil and water health and boost biodiversity. Executive Director Kerry Wright said the funding aligns with their mission to support the long-term health of farmland.
The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3.5 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen competitiveness, innovation and resiliency in Canada’s agriculture sector.
