Peterborough City Council has endorsed the next step in the Multi-Use Sport and Event Centre (MUSEC) project, selecting 182 Townsend Street as the preferred location for the long-planned facility.
The property, currently home to the City’s bus garage and a secondary public works site, would become surplus once the new bus garage on Romaine Street is complete. The site was highlighted as a strong candidate because it is fully City-owned, offers significant redevelopment potential, and sits close to the downtown core — a key part of the City’s Downtown First public investment strategy.
Staff also recommended beginning a process to invite submissions from the private sector on potential partnerships related to the project. This call for submissions would cover 182 Townsend Street, the portion of Townsend Street between Aylmer and George streets, municipally owned properties on Wolfe Street, and the existing Memorial Centre property east of Roger Neilson Way.
The MUSEC project, launched in 2018, aims to deliver a roughly 155,000-square-foot facility with seating for about 5,800. The feasibility study and site analysis weighed factors like potential economic impact, market opportunities, cost comparisons between a new build and upgrades to the PMC, and proximity to downtown businesses.
Design options for the preferred site could include daylighting Jackson Creek to enhance the area’s aesthetics and environmental contribution. The City says locating the facility at Townsend Street could allow better use of downtown parking during off-peak hours and create opportunities for a wider redevelopment district.
