The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has announced a name change for a Napanee school, now officially called Monsignor J.J. O’Neill Catholic School.
The update replaces the previous title, J.J. O’Neill Catholic School, to better reflect the honorific of its namesake. Monsignor J.J. O’Neill was a respected Catholic educator who championed the values of service, faith, and excellence while supporting students and families in the community.
O’Neill became pastor of St. Patrick Church in Napanee in 1969 and played a key role in acquiring land for what would become Napanee Separate School. The school was named in his honour in 1978.
Officials say the name adjustment comes at the right time, as the school is currently undergoing major renovations.
The change was approved by the Board of Trustees in April, and is now in effect for the new school year.
