Peterborough and area residents are being encouraged to participate in Septic Awareness Week, running from September 15 to 19.
This initiative, led by the Ontario Onsite Wastewater Association (OOWA) in partnership with Western Canada Onsite Wastewater Management Association (WCOWMA) and Waste Water Nova Scotia Society, aims to promote responsible septic system use and maintenance through education and public engagement.
A key component of the week is a free, interactive webinar on Monday, September 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. The session will provide practical guidance on maintaining systems, preventing failures, and protecting local water sources. Homeowners can also access daily tips and resources through OOWA’s website and social media channels, as well as guides, videos, and downloadable materials at www.oowa.org/homeowner-resources.
In the County of Peterborough, there are 124 sewage systems that require re-inspection every five years under the Mandatory Maintenance Inspection Program. These inspections help ensure that waste is properly treated, protecting drinking water and local ecosystems. The cost for a re-inspection is $325 per property, covering professional staff, administration, and program resources. Approximately 85-90% of properties require only one site visit for a sewage re-inspection certificate to be issued. However, some properties may require additional visits at no extra charge. Bill Goodale, President of OOWA, emphasized the importance of regular maintenance, stating, “Septic Awareness Week is a time to remind everyone that regular maintenance isn’t just a recommendation – it’s a responsibility. By taking simple steps today, we ensure clean water and a healthier Ontario for future generations.”
Kelly Andrews, OOWA’s Executive Director, added, “Understanding how these systems work, how to care for them properly, and why it matters is an essential first step toward responsible ownership. Septic Awareness Week offers a valuable opportunity for system owners to learn the basics and beyond. When it comes to septic systems, ‘out of sight’ should never mean ‘out of mind.’”
With millions of septic systems across Canada, organizers say this week is a chance for Peterborough residents to ensure their systems operate safely and efficiently.
Registration for Ontario’s webinar is available through Microsoft Virtual Events, while Western Canadian homeowners can sign up at wcowma.com/septic-awareness-week-2025.
