The Ontario Provincial Police are stepping up enforcement on roads, waterways, and trails this Labour Day long weekend, urging everyone to do their part to stay safe.
So far in 2025, 214 people have died on OPP-patrolled roads, with speeding, impairment, distractions, and not wearing a seatbelt among the top contributing factors. Police say these behaviours continue to cause preventable tragedies year after year.
The OPP says drivers and passengers are key partners in safety, and anyone spotting an impaired or dangerous driver should call 9-1-1.
The OPP’s Media Relations Coordinator, Bill Dickson, says officers will be targeting risky behaviours on both land and water.
Officers will also be keeping a close eye on boaters and off-road riders, reminding everyone that lifejackets and helmets can mean the difference between life and death. With drownings already high this summer, Dickson says boaters should be wearing their wear lifejackets.
As students head back to school next week, police say the Labour Day weekend is an important time to commit to safer driving habits and help make sure everyone gets home safely. The OPP says their officers will be watching closely for unsafe driving, including speeding and distractions.
